From 'Another Side Of Bob Dylan' 1964. G D G C Far between sundown's finish, and midnight's broken toll G C D G We ducked inside the doorway, thunder crashin' D G C As majestic bells of bolts struck shadows in the sounds G D riff G Seeming to be the chimes of freedom flashin' D G Flashing for the warriors whose strength is not to fight C G Am D Flashing for the refugees in the unarmed road of flight G D G C And for each and every underdog soldier in the night G C D G GC D G And we gazed upon the chimes of freedom flashin' D G C In the city's melted furnace, unexpectedly we watched G D riff G D With faces hidden as the walls were tightening G D G C As the echo of the wedding bells before the blowin' rain G D riff G Dissolved into the bells of the lighting D G Tolling for the rebel, tolling for the rake C G Am D Tolling for the luckless, the abandoned and forsaked G D G C Tolling for the outcast, burnin' constantly at stake G C D G riff G And we gazed upon the chimes of freedom flashin' G D C G Through the mad mystic hammering of the wild ripping hail G C D G The sky cracked its poems in naked wonder G D riff G That the clinging of the church bells blew far into the breeze D G Leaving only bells of lightning and its thunder C G Am G Striking for the gentle, striking for the kind G D G C Striking for the guardians and protectors of the mind G D G C An' the unpawned painter behind his rightful time G C D G GC D G An' we gazed upon the chimes of freedom flashing. D G C In the wild cathedral evening the rain unraveled tales G D riff G D For the disrobed faceless forms of no position G D G C Tolling for the tongues with no place to bring their thoughts G D riff G All down in taken-for-granted situations D G Tolling for the deaf an' blind, tolling for the mute C G Am D For the mistreated, mateless mother, the mistitled prostitute G D G C For the misdemeanor outlaw, chased an' cheated by pursuit riff G G C D G An' we gazed upon the chimes of freedom flashing. G D C G Even though a cloud's white curtain in a far-off corner flashed G C D G An' the hypnotic splattered mist was slowly lifting D G C Electric light still struck like arrows, fired but for the ones G D riff G Condemned to drift or else be kept from drifting D G Tolling for the searching ones, on their speechless, seeking trail C G Am D For the lonesome-hearted lovers with too personal a tale G D G C An' for each unharmful, gentle soul misplaced inside a jail G C D G GC D G An' we gazed upon the chimes of freedom flashing. D G C Starry-eyed an' laughing as I recall when we were caught G D riff G D Trapped by no track of hours for they hanged suspended G D G C As we listened one last time an' we watched with one last look G D riff G Spellbound an' swallowed 'til the tolling ended D G Tolling for the aching ones whose wounds cannot be nursed C G Am D For the countless confused, accused, misused, strung-out ones an' worse G D C G An' for every hung-up person in the whole wide universe riff G G C D G An' we gazed upon the chimes of freedom flashing. Enjoy!
